Post 6: Making Beauty From Destruction

Israeli Artist Yaron Bob

What do you do with something meant to destroy you?

We stopped at the studio of Israeli artist Yaron Bob who takes rockets, mortar shells and shrapnel fired into Israel and turns them into beautiful jewelry, mezuzahs and candlesticks.

He calls his work Rockets into Roses.

Behind the art is a painful story. Yaron lost 40 friends in nearby communities on October 7 and survived two rocket attacks near his home. Outside his workshop are piles of rockets, mortar shells and twisted shrapnel, some taller than us, manufactured in Russia, China and Iran. More than 60,000 rockets have been fired into Israel in recent years, including 30,000 since October 7.

Standing there, surrounded by remnants of destruction, you feel the weight of what these pieces represent.

In Yaron’s hands, they transform from an act meant to kill to an act of beauty, meaning and hope. Video: Malka Kochan
